So glad I am not feeding this! Mind you, the food bill for my two dogs and six cats is probably not far behind this.
Go and look - this dogs foot is bigger than his owner's hand!
Meanwhile, I had better go and get some food for all the humans too - it is Christmas Eve: one sleep to go. Tomorow we will see Phoebe's family. They are staying with us next week.... yee haa.
Lots of lovely recent Xmas pictures of them all here.... http://treacytravels.blogspot.com/
James and Jess are chillin' ( where it is relaxing and cold) , in Vancouver with my brother's family. Just got off an early morning skype with them... bed hair and all - was lovely to see them. WIll catch them again tomorrow for Xmas day.
Wishing you all a wonderful Xmas - eat, drink, be merry and enjoy friends, family and here, a glorious sunny day! The upper half of the world has their wish of a white Xmas - me, I am happy in the new swing seat, with a glass of something cold and my feet up... the best part? I can use my laptop out there as it is shady!

This is always the sad reality of people allowing their cats, or dogs, to breed, is that there are far too many needing homes and not enough people offering homes. Whether this oversupply appears worse becuase of the recession, or as they say, as a result of theri own advertising, it will probably result in a lot of kittens being put to sleep .If you can help with placements, or fostering, I am sure any local SPCA would like to hear from you.

Although the pictures are unusual, the wonder of these lovely people caring for a cat that most people would have put to sleep is worth reading...
When Chase was four weeks old, she was hit by a car and left. Luckily, after a few days, someone found her and brought her to a clinic, and after she was treated for her injuries (including amputation of a back leg) she was rehomed to one of the clinic’s technicians. However, her face later sloughed off due to injuries, resulting in the loss of her nose and the surrounding skin. Here is Chase as The Christmas Cat.....

Today, I officially started being on holiday... for quite a while. I know this, but it doesn't seem real. I imagine I will want to go to work as usual on Monday... might take me a few days to switch off and not to think about the pile of work waiting for us all to return next month! I guess if I was packing to get on a plane tomorrow it might feel more real... but burnout tends to make things feel different. There is a mild sense of relief and I am sure the rest will sort itself out. At least it is hot! We have a strong NorWester here pushing up the temperatures...
Last night we went to see Avatar in 3D...
Absolutely amazing and I was spellbound for three hours..... and the 3D really made you feel like you were in the movie with them.
10 ice creams out of 10... and that is not how many we ate in the three hours... :)

Although these pictures are upsetting, I really think this site is worth a look. It will probably put you off circuses for life, especially if they involve live animals.
I stopped going to them years ago... If the pictures are not showing, please go to the site:
Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
A risk assessment must be submitted before an open sleigh is considered safe for members of the public to travel on. The risk assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly if passengers are of larger proportions. Please note, permission must be gained from
landowners before entering their fields. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we would request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.
While Shepherds Watched
While shepherds watched
Their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around
The union of Shepherd's has complained that it breaches health and safety regulations to insist that shepherds watch their flocks without appropriate seating arrangements being provided, therefore benches, stools and orthopaedic chairs are now available. Shepherds have also requested that due to the inclement weather
conditions at this time of year that they should watch their flocks via cctv cameras from centrally heated shepherd observation huts.
Please note, the angel of the lord is reminded that before shining his / her glory all around she / he must ascertain that all shepherds have been issued with glasses capable of filtering out the harmful effects of UVA, UVB and Glory.
Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load
The RSPCA have issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a load that a donkey of small stature is permitted to carry, also included in the guidelines is guidance regarding how often to feed the donkey and how many rest breaks are required over a four hour plodding period. Please note that due to the increased
risk of pollution from the dusty road, Mary and Joseph are required to wear face masks to prevent inhalation of any airborne particles. The donkey has expressed his discomfort at being labelled 'little' and would prefer just to be simply referred to as Mr. Donkey. To comment upon his height or lack thereof may be considered an infringement of his equine rights.
We Three Kings
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
Whilst the gift of gold is still considered acceptable - as it may be redeemed at a later date through such organisations as 'cash for gold' etc, gifts of frankincense and myrrh are not appropriate due to the potential risk of oils and fragrances causing allergic reactions. A suggested gift alternative would be to make a donation
to a worthy cause in the recipients name or perhaps give a gift voucher.
We would not advise that the traversing kings rely on navigation by stars in order to reach their destinations and suggest the use of RAC routefinder or satellite navigation, which will provide the quickest route and advice regarding fuel consumption. Please note as per the guidelines from the RSPCA for Mr Donkey, the
camels carrying the three kings of Orient will require regular food and rest breaks.
Facemasks for the three kings are also advisable due to the likelihood of dust from the camels hooves.
The Rocking Song
Little Jesus, sweetly sleep, do not stir;
We will lend a coat of fur,
We will rock you, rock you, rock you,
We will rock you, rock you, rock you:
Fur is no longer appropriate wear for small infants, both due to risk of allergy to animal fur, and for ethical reasons. Therefore faux fur, a nice cellular blanket or perhaps micro-fleece material should be considered a suitable alternative.
Please note, only persons who have been subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check and have enhanced clearance will be permitted to rock baby Jesus. Persons must carry their CRB disclosure with them at all times and be prepared to provide three forms of identification before rocking commences.
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.
You are advised that under the Equal Opportunities for All policy, it is inappropriate for persons to make comment with regard to the ruddiness of any part of Mr. R. Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr R Reindeer from the Reindeer Games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken
against those found guilty of this offence. A full investigation will be implemented and sanctions - including suspension on full pay - will be considered whilst this investigation takes place.

Phoebe's family have had a busy weekend... because they had her sisters' fifth birthday party. We got to talk to the princess of the day by phone... so was great to see the photos this morning. 12sleeps till we see them all again!!!! Click on the link to see more pictures of it all...
James and Jess are still in London...but on Tuesday they are leaving, to spend Xmas with my brother in Vancouver.
Life back in the West agrees with them...but then London in her Xmas lights is special - I almost wish I was there. Instead I am amusing myself blogging, while relaxing in my new three seater, flattens to a bed, canopied, outdoor swing... and yesterday it was in 30C heat - I can thoroughly recommend it for stress relief!
One more week and I get some holidays - can't wait. Roll on Jan 1st too - 2009 has not been a year I will particularly want to remember! Onward and upward :)

Despite 30 years as a vet and 14 of them running a cattery, I still react badly if I get cat fur in my eyes. Perhaps this is why I see my cats as decorative rather than interactive; excessive stroking leaves fur on my hands.... so I don't handle them as much as I want to - but Bailey can still sleep cuddled close near my head, and I cope.
Shall I start on the vacuuming and hassles associated with keeping ahead of the fur mountain these all create?
Or all the costs?
I do feel sad that these might be the last dogs I own.. the thought of not being tied to kennels and walks and worries about leaving them for too long may mean I do not get another dog.. but then I think perhaps a small, maybe even a non-shedding dog, that can come with me everywhere, even to work, might be tempting. Perhaps I could do a Paris Hilton handbag job!
My friend is buying a Burmilla, which is the cat you can see in this picture. They look beautiful, and I am very tempted by them. More realistically, perhaps I need a hairless Sphynx cat... swap brushing for bathing and get more interactive. Maybe this would even replace the need for a dog in my life? One of my students brings her Sphynx up to polytech on a lead...
So, now, are you a cat person or a dog person...or both?

I have not written much about the family lately, but Phoebe's family updated their blog tonight and we got new pictures... so here is the ballerina herself, and just follow through the link to see what she has been up to with her sisters :)
James and Jess have left Bangladesh -
you can read all about their last days on theri blog, and how they are coping with the transition to Western living and cold weather in London... before they have Xmas in Vancouver with my brother, and later visit New York before heading home via Australia, arriving early February. They left Bangladesh on Dec 3rd, their third wedding anniversary - seems so much has happened in those few years!

Alley, a chocolate Burmese, has visited 60 countries with her owners... over 7 years. in fact, she was a kitten when they first set sail! Luckily they are going to live on the yacht for the next few months -just as well as she has probably forgotten what dry land feels like!
I love the fact she doesn't like water.....

Jumbo is a well known figure in New Zealand - where she has been the star of a touring circus for 28 years. This has not been without some controversy and finally she has been handed over to the SPCA’s care. She was moved to her new home at Franklin Zoo during the weekend. This 36-year-old African elephant is now one of only two elephants living in New Zealand. The other is an Indian elephant at Auckland Zoo. (They recently lost their other elephant, Kashin. )
Jumbo’s handler and good friend Tony Ratcliffe, who has been with Jumbo for 28 years, visits her every day.
"Jumbo is a middle-aged elephant. Elephants can live upwards of 60 years."
Tony has a strong bond with Jumbo and is the only one who can take her in and out of her truck, where she stays overnight.
"An elephant chooses her friends. Once they do that, they bond for life. You can’t just walk in and out of an elephant’s life."
As you can imagine, Jumbo needs a lot of food - in fact she costs about $200 daily. The SPCA has set up a special fund for the public to support the cost of her care and feeding. Donations can be made to the Jumbo Fund at any SPCA office or via the SPCA website at www.rnzspca.org.nz.
